Black Hat is six days, three very different experiences, one venue. Here's how it breaks down.
Four days of intensive, hands-on, instructor-led courses — everything from exploit development to cloud forensics to AI security. These are all-day commitments, priced per course, and they book out fast. You take these in place of, not on top of, the main conference.
Closed-door executive tracks for leaders and specialists (CISO, AI, Financial Services, Healthcare, Innovators & Investors). The Business Hall now opens Tuesday afternoon too — so Summit passholders get a head start on the floor.
Two days of peer-reviewed Briefings on the Level 2 concourse — 100+ talks, Keynotes, the Locknote, and Arsenal's open-source tool demos. This is the heart of Black Hat and where most first-timers spend their week.
Hundreds of vendors on the show floor, the all-new Cyber District for 2026, and swag by the metric ton. Great for product research, enterprise questions, and the fastest corridor conversations you'll have all week.
Black Hat ends Thursday and DEF CON opens the same day at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Together it's "Hacker Summer Camp." If you can stay — stay. Completely different culture, both worth doing.

03 · before you go
Six things that cost first-timers real money and stress if skipped. Handle these now.
Mandalay Bay is connected to the venue and sells out for the week. Book any property on the south Strip near Mandalay Bay (Luxor, Excalibur, Delano, Park MGM) for the shortest commute. Farther hotels look cheaper until you price the 45-minute Strip traffic each morning.
Pricing tiers jump repeatedly as the event approaches, and late registration ends Jul 31. If you've got approval to go, pull the trigger. Waiting two weeks can cost hundreds.
Decide your mission before you fly: research for your team, vendor evaluations, recruiting, or career moves. Send a one-page "what I'm bringing back" plan to your boss. It makes the trip fundable and the report easy.
The fastest thing at Black Hat is a good hallway conversation. The fastest way to lose it is fumbling for contacts. Bring 200+ cards, or a clean digital profile. Serious, clean, memorable.
Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable — you'll walk miles of carpet a day. Layers for the A/C, a battery bank, and a plan for what goes on your badge lanyard and what doesn't.
Install the official Black Hat Events app before you land. Read the briefing titles, star your must-sees, and accept now that you can't see everything. Choose your hardest conflicts in advance, not under pressure.

The venue is huge and the schedule is dense. A first-timer's day, optimized.
Grab your badge the moment registration opens on your first day, then you're free. Wear it at all times — it's your door pass, meal ticket, and party entry all in one. Never leave it in a checked bag.
Breakfast is included with Briefings-level passes — show up early, eat, and be in your seat at the first session. The most anticipated talks fill rooms; arrive 15 minutes early or catch the queue.
Don't wander the whole floor. Pick the vendors you actually care about, hit their demos, and grab lunch at a sponsor's booth. Walk the rest later for swag. Business Hall hours: Tue–Thu.
Arsenal is where researchers demo open-source tools live — the rawest, most practical hacking content of the week, and very first-timer friendly. Ask dumb questions. Tool authors love an audience.
Keynotes open things, the Locknote (a panel dissecting the week's research) closes it. Plan to attend both — they're the moments everyone is talking about in the hallways after.
Vegas in August, casino air, and back-to-back talks are a brutal combo. Water bottle, electrolytes, real food, and an early night at least once. You'll do more by seeing less.
06 · networking
Introverts, this section is for you. Networking at Black Hat is quieter than it looks.
Between-session hallways are where the real Black Hat lives. Standing near a door holding coffee is a conversation starter. Use the inevitable confusion as a hook: "Hey — is this where Keynote 2 is?"
The easiest opener of all: ask someone about the Briefing you both just left. "What did you make of the last demo?" is a locked-in conversation.
Tool authors are there to talk. Every Arsenal demo ends with a real discussion — it's the most accessible shop talk of the week for newcomers.
Lunch alone in a corner is a wasted hour. Sit at a table with strangers, introduce yourself, ask what they do. It's the single highest-leverage habit of the trip.
Sponsor parties and Midnight in the War Room are loud but golden. Go early, set a limit, and always know how you're getting back to your hotel. Priorities: meet three new people, not seven drinks.
While it's fresh, connect with everyone you met on LinkedIn and send a one-line note. "Great meeting you at Black Hat — really enjoyed your question on the XSS talk." This is the follow-up that actually converts.
07 · after dark
The Thursday Locknote and DEF CON 34's opening collide in the same 24-hour window. If you can stay through the weekend, you get the full Hacker Summer Camp experience — new venue, new culture, new rules.
Black Hat is polished, corporate, and research-driven. DEF CON is a community festival — villages for lockpicking, hardware, and AI, a huge Capture The Flag, soldering workshops, and a badge-making culture with its own economy. The pace slows, the walls come down.

Pre-reg closes Jul 31, 8:59 PM EDT — after that it's LineCon only. This year's badge is an electronic hardware badge (open-source, inspectable). Pre-reg buys online still redeem on-site; the badge covers all talks, villages, and contests.
~30 villages are the heart of DEF CON. Badge gets you into all of them — no extra ticket. Your first day, show up to the ones that matter most before they fill.
Some village workshops need separate sign-ups done at the village itself — go early on day one to claim a spot.
DEF CON blocks discount rates but resort fees and parking stay. Read the fine print before you book.
No attendee list, no official lead capture, press rules are its own thing — DEF CON deliberately leaves no paper trail.

Wednesday (Briefings Day 1) — Keynotes, the most anticipated disclosures, and the Business Hall are all live. You'll miss the Locknote, but you'll catch the week's energy at its peak.
Pick it up Thursday, Aug 6, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, Mandalay Bay Ballroom Foyer, Level 2. A DEF CON symbol prints on your Black Hat badge as proof of purchase — bring that badge. DEF CON tickets are not sold on-site at Black Hat, and after Jul 31 your only options are pre-reg (closed) or cash at the door.
Black Hat badges have moved to mobile QR badges in recent years, but RFID blockers are cheap insurance and a common sight. Keep your badge body-facing, and never scan unknown QR codes or tap unknown stickers — including the ones people stick on you as a joke. That's part of the culture.
Comfortable business casual. Lots of t-shirts, a few suits in the Summit tracks. Nobody is judging you — except for your footwear choices. Comfortable shoes win.
Recorded sessions are included with Briefings, Briefings + Training, and Briefings + Summit passes in the events app (this year Aug 15–Sep 14, with a one-year add-on). Take notes live anyway — the hallway conversations matter more.
Yes, but the talks move fast and the wifi is famously crowded. A notebook is often faster. For Training courses, your laptop is mandatory and listed in each course's requirements.
Breakfast and lunch on conference days come with Briefings-level passes. Dinners, snacks, and everything in Vegas is on you. Budget ahead — the hotel mini-bar is a scam, and the coffee lines are real.
It is legitimately 105°F+. The Strip is walkable at dawn and by late night only. Uber/Lyft surge heavily at convention hours. If you're staying at Mandalay Bay or connected properties, you'll barely need to go outside at all.
No. Official registration only — blackhat.com or the Informa Festivals registration portal. Scams ramp up hard in the weeks before the conference. Your employer's AP team should pay directly to official channels.
